The Midge Pupa

Midges are one of the four aquatic food groups that trout will feed on.  What makes the Midge so important to the fly angler is the Midge is an aquatic insect that can and most often will, emerge on a daily basis.  That means that these bugs emerge 365 days a year.  Most anglers, during a Midge hatch will either match the emerging Midges with either a Midge Pupa pattern or a Midge adult pattern.  Of the two the Midge Pupa pattern has proven to be the most successful.  The Midge goes through a complete metamorphosis and it’s the Midge Pupa artificial fly that we use to imitate exactly what the natural looks like just under or in the surface film (meniscus).
